Navia Design is a Finnish naval architecture and boat design company. We help boat manufacturers and brand owners develop new boats from the earliest concept all the way to production and market launch.

Our work ranges from one-off projects to complete model ranges, and from portfolio strategy to the development of new boats.

Making the whole thing work.

The boat is only one part of the job. We need to understand the client’s business, brand and ambitions before we start designing. Then we bring together the right people to solve the problem, from design and naval architecture to engineering, production and brand. And we stay involved until the idea has become something real.

What we do

You can come to us with an idea, or just the beginning of one. We help you figure out what it could be, turn it into a product concept and work out how to make it real. From design and naval architecture to engineering, prototyping, production and brand, we have the people and skills to take it all the way to a tangible vessel.

We are comfortable joining a project at any stage, but we particularly like being there early, when there are still more questions than answers.

 

We start by defining the product in its market context: who it is for, where it fits within the portfolio and what it needs to achieve commercially and functionally. Research, market understanding and product strategy give the project a clear direction before the design is developed further.

Exterior & Interior styling and General Arrangements are progressed in parallel with preliminary structural and hydrodynamic calculations, so technical constraints are understood early and do not force unnecessary aesthetic compromises later in the build. Hull form, weight and centre of gravity, space allocation, propulsion and critical onboard systems are developed concurrently, supported by early resistance and power predictions against speed, range and operating targets.

The concept is also assessed against applicable classification society rules and flag-state requirements, establishing a sound basis for detailed design and engineering.

Our structural engineering covers composite, aluminium and steel vessels from early structural definition through to production-ready documentation. Using local and global Finite Element Analysis (FEA), we optimise structures for strength, stiffness and weight while reducing unnecessary material and construction cost. Load predictions, structural weight calculations and continuous weight control are carried through the design process.

Engineering is developed to applicable classification society standards, including DNV, ISO, ABYC and JCI, as well as relevant flag-state requirements. Where a design falls outside standard regulatory frameworks, we develop alternative engineering solutions and demonstrate an equivalent level of safety. The work continues through to detailed production drawings, laminate schedules and shipyard-ready construction data.

We use advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and high-performance computing to simulate real-world hydrodynamics. Virtual testing is used to analyse resistance, wake fields, acceleration, dynamic trim, self-propulsion and manoeuvrability, allowing hull form and propulsion to be refined against performance and efficiency targets.

The same simulation capabilities extend to seakeeping and extreme sea states, assessing slamming, added resistance, handling and passenger comfort in different wave conditions. For hydrofoil vessels, we model lift, drag, cavitation and foil interaction to optimise stability, efficiency and high-speed performance.

Stability and weight are assessed continuously as the vessel develops, allowing exterior design and General Arrangements to progress alongside safety and performance requirements. Our work covers intact and damage stability, loading conditions, centre of gravity and metacentric height (GM), as well as dynamic behaviour and passenger comfort.

Weight distribution and centre of gravity are tracked from concept through production and verified through inclining experiments. We also produce the stability booklets, loading manuals and supporting calculations required for classification society and flag-state approval.

We design boats around how they will actually be used. Exterior and interior design, ergonomics, materials and functionality develop together with naval architecture and engineering. And we prototype a lot. Virtual Reality, full-scale mock-ups and a combination of Mixed Reality allows us to see how an idea works in real life, pinpointing problems that are not evident in drawings and 3D models. We test, adjust and test again before committing our designs to production.

Being part of Aivan gives Navia access to a much wider design and brand team than a marine specialist would normally have around it. Aivan brings extensive experience in building and developing brands across industries, from strategy and identity to communication and market launch. Brand strategists, art directors, graphic designers and marketing specialists can be brought into a project as needed, without creating a separate process around them.

That means branding does not have to begin once the boat is finished. Product, brand and communication can develop in parallel, with insights moving easily between the teams as the concept takes shape. The result is a closer connection between what the boat is, how it fits into the portfolio and how it is eventually presented to the market.

We like solving problems. The more difficult or unconventional the challenge, the more interested we become.

We're always open to testing new ideas and exploring different ways of doing things. Sometimes the best solution starts with a question that sounds a little crazy.

At the same time, we're practical. Ideas only matter if they work in real life. We don't stop at concepts or presentations, yet prefer to stay involved until something can be built and tested on the water.

That's how we work together, too. Our multidisciplinary team brings together different perspectives, from naval architecture and engineering to design and brand development. We challenge assumptions and refine ideas until they work.

We're not the kind of partner who hands over drawings and walks away. We stay involved, test ideas to solve problems and work closely with our clients until the boat is ready for production.
